GOD SPAKE
Hebrews 1:1 ¶ God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Hebrews 2:1 ¶ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
The Lord God is the God of communication. This passage reveals that he speaks, and by and to whom. It also reveals when he does not speak, and to whom he remains silent, and what subject he does not convey to them, which is also most important. Hebrews 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
And the utterance of that communication is the very origination and sustaining of all creature life. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. And his word is also the origin of the believer’s spiritual life! 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
The progressive light of the rising s-u-n, reveals to us the picture and process of the gradually increasing of the Light of the S-o-n! John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
For the Eternal Son of God is that light who appeared on that first day of creation! The artificial lights – sun, moon and stars were not brought into existence until the fourth day. He truly is “the light of the world!” 1 John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Genesis 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
The progression of the increasing light of the word from God is seen in the first two verses of our context. Notice the two phrases, in past time, and in these last days. These are said, at first, to be at sundry times – that is, in separate revelations, and in divers manners – that is, in different ways. And those ways included, not only the prophets, but angels and animals! Acts 7:53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. Galatians 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
2 Peter 2:15,16 …Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet.
Then be sure and take note of the only authorized agent of the voice of God in these last days – the remaining days of time! That exclusive voice is the Lord Jesus Christ, by the Holy Spirit! John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
The Lord Jesus is the only voice the Father has commanded us to hear! Matthew 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
He is the Word from the beginning. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
He is the Word who became flesh! John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. He is the Eternal Son of God! Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Notice in that verse three he was “being” the express image of God’s Person. For he has existed as long as God has been! That shows his eternality as God.
Proverbs 8:29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
And then, afterward, in Hebrews one and verse four we read the phrase, “being made.” This phrase reveals the certainty of his humanity. For he had to “be,” before he could “be made” anything!
In order to be a child born on earth, he was a Son given from heaven! Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. The child who was born in Bethlehem was none else but the eternal Son of God who was then given human flesh!John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Failure to believe in the eternality of the Son of God, and his being made flesh – His Incarnation – is certain spiritual and eternal death! John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am, ye shall die in your sins. 1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 2 John 7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
He is the Word who is life! 1John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
The revelation of Christ, the Word, to the soul of man is life and light. It is that which makes free from the bondage of sin and darkness. John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Matthew 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
His word is so powerful in the giving of life and light that he must cease to speak for death and darkness to approach. For as soon as he spoke, the void, darkened world had life and light to appear. Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Psalm 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Therefore, for Satan to bring sin’s wages (death), upon the Lord Jesus, Christ had to cease to speak. Matthew 27:14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. 1 Corinthians 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
The necessity of the redemption of Christ required the light of this gospel to be hidden until after it’s accomplishment! Colossians 1:25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
The Apostle Peter instructs us that the Old Testament prophets prophesied revelations that were not entirely for their understanding in the full scope of our gospel privileges. 1 Peter 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
Dear Reader, it is a blessed privilege for us to hear the gospel that was kept from holy men and angels! Let us earnestly pray that we shall give the utmost heed to this opportunity which has eternal results! Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
