HE SHALL GLORIFY ME
John 16:7 ¶ Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
There are two absolutes that every true seeker of God’s salvation must know. They are:
1. To have Christ’s true and spiritual word depends solely upon the Holy Spirit!
2. To have the Holy Spirit depends entirely upon Christ’s glory!
That Greek word translated “glorify” in our John 16:14 verse is the same Greek word translated “honour” in John 8:54, and as “magnify” in Romans 11:13. I shall never forget Pastor E. W. Johnson of Pine Bluff, preaching of the necessity of one seeing “the glory of the cross” in order to be saved. But it was only as the Holy Spirit began to open up the scriptures to my poor soul that I could, hopefully, see more as to what that dear brother meant. Here are some of the verses given me: 1 Corinthians 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. 2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 1 Peter 1:21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
And it was also extremely sobering to have been given the understanding concerning the souls whom the Father seeks to be the only true worshippers. John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
All religionists can know the facts concerning the birth, life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ. But these facts in ones head do not produce salvation. In fact, these bare truths alone, without the spiritual awakening of the Holy Spirit brings one into greater darkness and judgment! 2 Peter 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
Luke 12:47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Salvation is associated with the spiritual understanding received from knowing the Lord Jesus as the Person of the Word! John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
The apostle writes, “I know WHOM I have believed,” not “I know WHAT I have believed!” 2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Satan himself knew the scriptures, as myriads of angels were present at the giving of the law. Psalm 68:17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place. Acts 7:53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. He quoted it to the Lord at the temptation as recorded in Matthew chapter four. But he shall have his part in the lake of fire, which burns for ever and ever. Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
We should carefully consider the following instruction by the Person of the Word concerning the written word. John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Christ’s Incarnation is the pattern for the believer’s regeneration! And the scriptures state that it was “the Word” which was made flesh and dwelt among us. It does not state, “The Information” was made flesh and dwelt among us! John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
For the scriptures without the spirit of the word is like the body without the soul. It is just a dead form. The undertaker makes the departed look as natural as possible lying in that casket. That is his job. But in reality, it is just a dead form. So the practicing religionist, mimicking some prescribed moral code, is yet dead in trespasses and sin! This is that to which the Lord referred when he stated, “Let the dead bury the dead.” That is, let those still dead spiritually bury those who are physically dead. Luke 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
One of the greatest evangelical fields in America is within church membership. For we don’t really know that many true Christians! We are mostly acquainted with formal religionists who present themselves to us as hypocrites in sheep’s clothing. Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? That is the reason why the Lord’s words to one of the greatest religionist’s of his day was of his need to be born again. John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
For to Nicodemus the Lord Jesus was just “a teacher come from God.” He gave Jesus no glory! Therefore he received not the spiritual meaning of the Lord’s words. He did not recognize that Jesus was, in fact, God come to teach, and not just another teacher come from God. Carefully reconsider this verse: 1 Peter 1:21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. Without Christ being given glory, faith is vain! Unless we bow to him in complete and humble submission, we cannot have but humanistic religious morality! It is only those who “see” the Lord as glorious, who receive true, redeeming faith! John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
To have the Holy Spirit depends entirely upon Christ’s glory! John 7:37 ¶ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Now consider the communion between the Son of God and the Father concerning his glory. John 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
Even though we cannot enter into the depths of their communion, we can understand these things. We can understand that the Lord Jesus was glorified, honored and magnified, at the cross! Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
And we can understand that receiving that honor from the Father had a direct bearing upon those given to the Son receiving Christ’s word and keeping it! Let me try your patience and present this verse for the third time! 1 Peter 1:21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. Our personal faith is dependent upon Christ’s having received honor and glory from the Father and revealed it unto us. We may not fully understand how that works, but we certainly must realize that it is certainly true!
And with that realization, let us reconsider the following instructions from our Lord concerning the work of the Holy Spirit to us. John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Dear Hearts, this great truth cannot just be made another note penciled into the margin of your Bibles! It must be chewed and swallowed and digested, and lived upon. For it is of that wondrous heavenly Bread which cannot be benefitted from with just a flesh and blood understanding! It must be that of which the Father reveals unto us as we pray and meditate upon Him! Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
It is that “understanding” which we receive in the same vein of our receiving the revelation of Christ to our souls! 1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 2:2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
We are to love the Lord our God with all our – what? – “heads?” No! With all “our hearts!” Shall we take our Bibles to heaven? No! For we are going there to meet the Person of the Word!
When her returning soldier boy came up on her front porch and knocked, did she say, “You will have to wait out there on the porch swing. It’s my daily time to get out your letters, untie the ribbon in which they are bundled and read them over again?” Absolutely not! She had not the slightest regard for anything but him! She almost tore the screen door off its hinges getting into his arms!
Dear Reader, are you just a Bible student, or are you a lover of the Lord Jesus Christ? Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Is the Lord Jesus glorified by you? Or is he just a ticket to get into heaven and avoid hell? Is he the lover of your soul? Is ours just a formal religion, or a spiritual marriage? Isaiah 54:5 For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called. Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Revelation 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.
