JUDAS’ CLEAN FEET
John 13:1 ¶ Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
John 13:21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
The Lord advised Peter that the matter of the true spiritual meaning of foot washing was not to be known at that present time. But he stated but thou shalt know hereafter. And we know that He meant that the Holy Spirit would reveal the spiritual understanding of these matters. (See John 16:13-15) And we come to understand that this being “an example” (John 13:15), and not an ordinance as baptism and the Lord’s Supper, we come to learn that it speaks of sanctification. For the apostles, pastors and teachers were to give forth the cleansing word by the Holy Spirit to keep believers unspotted from the world.
Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Therefore we see that those not involved in faithfully abiding in the word, administered by the Holy Spirit, providing their progressive sanctification, have no part with the Lord Jesus. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
In our verse two it states that supper was ended. But Judas had one more portion to eat. He reminds us of those in this day who readily partake of the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper but do not examine themselves in a consciousness of the Broken Bread Himself! For immediately after eating that last morsel Satan entered into him. And so those in our day who eat unworthily, eat damnation unto themselves! 1 Corinthians 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
So Judas entered into Hell with both feet cleaned. He had no reservation concerning this offense. Matthew 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. Therefore his feet were swift feet. They were swift to shed the holy blood of the Lamb of God! Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
While Judas entered into eternity with both feet washed, our Lord entered into eternity with both feet wounded. But these wounds identify him to the believers. Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
And all believers follow along in the example of Christ’s sufferings. 1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
Revelation 14:4 These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain,…
Others may wash our feet, but none can “guide” them but the Holy Spirit. 1 Timothy 5:9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
And Judas’ feet being washed is like those who receive water baptism, but have not been immersed into the Holy Spirit. They have escaped the pollutions of the world by joining a religious order and adopted a system of morality, but they have not been give a new nature by the Holy Spirit! They are but a washed sow. They have not the new nature of the sheep. 2 Peter 2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
Therefore we see that Judas walked with the Lord in only a legal faithfulness. The same as modern day church members who comply with the moral code of religion, but do not have a spiritual relationship with the Lord. 2 Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Judas’ religious conduct was guided by his covetousness. John 12:3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
And he was skilled in his pretense of innocence. For he pretended his innocence by asking the same question as did the other disciples when the Lord spoke of his denial. Matthew 26:21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? 25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
But God made him know and confess of his great crime! Matthew 27:3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, … 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. Philippians 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
