THE TWO DAUGHTERS
Luke 8:48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. 49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
My Daughter – Thy Daughter
The Scriptures seem to set forth the concept of “My Daughter – Thy Daughter,” in these two verses. The one is born of the natural to Jarius. His name means, Enlightener. The other is born of the Spirit to the Lord Jesus. His name means Jehovah Savior. Jarius can only present his daughter with a birth into natural light. Whereas the Lord Jesus presented his daughter into the spiritual light of life! (Jn. 8:12).
These two births are shown in John 3:5-8. John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Twelve Years
Luke 8:42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. 43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
At the exact same time Jairus’ daughter begin to live her natural life, Jesus’ daughter began her dying.
To only be born of the flesh is to enter into a progression of dying! Rom. 8:6a For to be carnally minded is death; 13a For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: The Lord warned Adam, for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. The Cambridge Bible reads in it’s margin reference; dying thou shalt die! That is, Adam’s disobedience bought on spiritual death. That spiritual death caused Adam’s physical death. And physical death, if not checked by sovereign regeneration, will certainly produce eternal death!
But to be born of the Holy Spirit is to be brought into God’s holy and eternal life! Romans 8:6b but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 13b but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
As previously stated, Jesus’ daughter began to enter into dying, as her life’s blood began to flow out, at the same time Jairus’ daughter began to live physically. And, dear soul, when once the Spirit undertakes the investing of life into a child of God, death to the fleshly man begins! For the Lord will have no flesh glory in his presence!
Romans 7:9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
Both Were Humanly Incurable
Both Lost their Living
Luke 8:43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
No human, or human power can conquer either physical or spiritual death! Rom. 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
None but the Lord Jesus Christ can accomplish both! Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Humans waste their lives and all their living seeking to physicians of no value (Job 13:4), trying to overcome the effects of their innate depravity! But heaven gives no other name among men for salvation, other than the name which is above every name, that of the Lord Jesus Christ! Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Even with the irreconcilable warfare within the believer’s soul, he always comes to the same conclusion! Listen to his heart cries as he struggles with the awareness of his remaining corruption. Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
The Issue of Blood
What was the malady assigned to Jesus’ daughter by eternal Wisdom? As listed above in verse 43, it was an issue of blood. And what was the remedy the Lamb of God was to provide from the foundation of the world? (1 Peter 1:19,20; Rev.13:8). It was an issue of blood. For Heb. 9:22 reveals, And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Even the word selected by the Holy Spirit to indicate her problem, is amazing in the way it ties her problem to Christ’s remedy! For the Greek word, here translated, issue, comes from a Greek word translated Deliverer in Romans 11:26! The key to their similarity is found in the meaning of the latter word. For a Deliverer is one who rushes to rescue! And it is this word rushes that ties the two together. For as the blood was rushing, or flowing, out of the woman, so Christ was rushing to our deliverance!
Applied grace necessitates sin! Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: The display of Sovereign Mercy is without accomplishment save on a guilty object! Rom. 9:23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
The man, Christ Jesus, looked at this dying sinner and understood that her death would be by the flow of her blood, if left unchecked. But he also understood that her life would be provided by the flow of his blood, as her Deliverer!
His being given over to the death on the cross is tied to our offences. And his resurrection from the dead is tied to our justification! Romans 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. His wounds were tied to our transgressions; his bruises to our iniquities; his chastisement to our peace! (Isa. 53:5). In order for her death blood to cease to flow, His life’s blood must flow!
Heb. 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Rev. 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Rev. 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
